Argument
It is only a few short days until we, the seniors of this high school, will be handed our diplomas. After we graduate, what next? Perhaps the majority of us will go, or are planning to go to college, some will have jobs, and a large portion of us will have nothing at all to do.
My belief is that we should continue our education by entering college. There are those narrow-minded ones who argue that it is merely a waste of time and money as there are no better positions to be secured after going to college than there were before. I sincerely believe that regardless of the type of work one does, a few years in college is an asset.
One of the local business colleges uses the illustration of the farmer, who, when asked if he had planted his potatoes replied, “No, the bugs got my crop last year, so I’m not planting any this year.” Afraid to take a chance! People say, “What’s the use of college? There isn’t anything to do.” That’s just as foolish as the farmer. Of course, we’ll go to college and will probably have to wait before securing suitable positions, but we will be much better suited for them when we do get them.
There are those of us who will have jobs immediately after graduation. Those who have should consider themselves quite fortunate. I still believe, however, that college life gives one a finished touch, a better understanding of life and its problems. The fundamental principle of education is not merely a collection of dry facts, but a better understanding of everyday things.
Some of us students will venture upon the sea of matrimony—a few have already done so. I can say this is not such a bad thing after all, but why not wait a year or two, at least, until one has had time to develop mentally, to get a clearer view on the meaning of such important factors?
Last, but far from least, are those poor unfortunate graduates who will have nothing at all to do except remain at home. Of course one can find plenty of things to do around home, but for our own benefit we should attempt to do something worthwhile. Personally, I haven’t the faintest idea as to what my future will be after graduation. College life, I hope; marriage, not likely; temporary idleness, I expect.
